Current vs. retirement income
Question: I don't understand the rule that you need 85 percent of your pre-retirement salary in retirement. After all, if you're contributing 15 percent to a 401(k) or other savings plan and you're paying Social Security and other taxes, you're already living on much less than 85 percent of your salary. And if you pay off your mortgage before retiring, I figure you're still ahead of the game if you shoot for 70 percent. What do you think? -Clifford, Orange, Conn. Sitting on $100,000
Question: Is now the time to invest new money in mutual funds? I've been sitting on $100,000 for over a year because the market has been climbing to historic highs. I have always been told to buy low and sell high, so do you think I should wait for the correction before I invest this money. Or should I just invest it now? - Mike B., Memphis, Tenn. Buying a house and saving for retirement
Question: My wife and I are currently renting, but we'd like to buy a house. Problem is, we happen to live in somewhat expensive area where single-family homes cost at least $300,000. Our combined income is low and we barely have enough savings for even a small down payment. We're thrifty, though, and we can now save about $1,000 per month. My question is whether we're better off saving all that money for a down payment for a house in a couple of years or focus on putting money in our retirement accounts? We think we can carry a decent size monthly mortgage payment, but I'm afraid we won't qualify for a loan because our income is too low. What should we do? - H.S., North Bend, Washington Personal finance news - CNNMoney.com, 2007-05-14 03:34:06
